Custom Kitchen Cabinets in Vancouver: What to Plan Before You Build
Updated: 6 days ago
A kitchen can look beautiful in photos and still be frustrating to use every day. Drawers may block an appliance, a corner may be hard to reach, or the cabinets may leave useful space above them empty. Custom kitchen cabinetry gives you a chance to solve those problems while choosing a look that suits your home.
At Maison Nad Cabinetry & Millwork, we design and build cabinetry for homes in Vancouver, North Vancouver, and Burnaby. Here are the decisions we recommend making before choosing door colours and finishes.
Start with how you use the kitchen
Think about the tasks you repeat every day. Where do you prepare food? Where do you put dishes away? Which items are difficult to reach in your current kitchen?
Those answers help determine whether you need wider drawers, a pantry cabinet, more usable space beside the range, or storage closer to the dishwasher. A good cabinet layout should make those routines easier. It should also account for appliance sizes, door swings, walkways, and the space needed to open drawers fully.
Make storage fit the space
Standard cabinet sizes do not always make the best use of a room. Custom cabinetry can accommodate an uneven wall, a tight opening, or cabinets that extend toward the ceiling.
Corners deserve particular attention. Depending on the layout and door opening, a corner might work well with shelves, a Lazy Susan, or another pull-out accessory. Each option has different space requirements, so we select it after checking the actual cabinet dimensions rather than adding it to the plan automatically.

Choose materials for appearance and daily use
The cabinet box, doors, and exposed panels do different jobs. For many projects, we use cabinet-grade plywood boxes and specify the door finish separately. Shaker doors, wood finishes, and laminates can create very different looks, and the right choice depends on how you want the kitchen to feel and how you plan to maintain it.
Hardware matters too. Soft-close hinges and full-extension drawers can make storage more comfortable to use. When comparing cabinetry quotes, ask what materials and hardware are included, along with the finish of any exposed sides and panels.
When selecting finishes, consider how much maintenance you want. Matte finishes hide fingerprints better than glossy ones, which is helpful in busy kitchens. We guide homeowners through these choices to find the best fit for their needs.

Decide whether to replace the boxes
A new look does not always require an entirely new kitchen. If existing cabinet boxes are sound and the layout works well, replacing doors and selected panels may be worth considering. If you want to move appliances, change storage substantially, or extend cabinets to the ceiling, new boxes may give you more flexibility.
The right choice depends on the condition and dimensions of what is already there. We assess that before recommending a scope of work.

Bring a few useful details to your first conversation
You do not need a finished design to get started. Photos of the current kitchen, rough wall measurements, appliance information, and a short list of what bothers you most are enough for an initial discussion. If you have reference photos, tell us what you like about them: the colour, the door style, the storage or the overall layout.
Maison Nad Cabinetry & Millwork can help you turn those ideas into a cabinet plan suited to your space. If you are planning a kitchen project in Vancouver, North Vancouver, or Burnaby, contact us to discuss your layout and see how we can bring your dream kitchen to life.
Budget, lead times and installation: questions to ask
For a kitchen renovation, compare the completed cabinetry scope rather than just the advertised cabinet price. The room size, cabinet count, door finish, drawers, organizers, end panels and installation requirements can change the quote. Countertops, appliances, demolition, plumbing and electrical work need clear inclusion or exclusion.
Can custom kitchen cabinets fit a budget under $15,000?
A budget ceiling alone is not enough to confirm a custom kitchen price. A small, simple layout and a larger kitchen with an island, tall storage and many drawers are different projects. Start with the maximum amount you want to spend and ask which cabinet scope could fit it. Contact Maison Nad for a project-specific quote based on your measured room and selected specifications.
If the preliminary scope exceeds your budget, compare simpler door and finish choices, fewer specialized accessories, a smaller scope or retaining sound existing boxes where suitable. Keep essential drawer access, appliance clearance and installation requirements in the comparison. Ask for the effect of each change rather than assuming it saves a fixed percentage.
How long does custom kitchen cabinetry take?
Ask for separate estimates for design and measurement, drawing approval, material procurement, fabrication and finishing, and installation. Also ask when the quoted lead time starts: the first consultation, deposit, final measurements or approved drawings. These dates are not interchangeable.
A requested move-in date does not establish production availability. Confirm the current schedule with Maison Nad before coordinating demolition or booking other trades. There is no guaranteed fast-track lead time published here. Changes after approval, unavailable hardware or a site that is not ready can affect the sequence.
What should professional installation include?
Discuss access, cabinet positioning, levelling, fixing, filler and panel fitting, door and drawer adjustment, and a final check of operation. Confirm who removes old cabinets, handles debris and coordinates any countertop templating, plumbing or electrical work. Request the responsibilities in writing so that another trade's work is not mistaken for part of the cabinet scope.
What is the typical ordering sequence?
Begin with photos, rough dimensions, appliances, preferred finishes and your budget. Discuss the proposed scope, arrange the measurement and design steps, review the written quote and drawings, confirm material choices and the schedule, and prepare the room for installation. Agree the exact sequence and payment terms for your project before committing.
